PTI references against dissident MNAs are thrown out by ECP
PTI MNAs claim they did not break party rules during the no-confidence vote.
ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) unanimously rejected the referrals seeking the disqualification of the country's 20 rebellious MPs on Wednesday.
After the dissident members and the PTI lawyers finished their arguments today, the Election Commission deferred its decision.
The ECP announced in a brief statement that the PTI's declarations against its legislators were determined to be in violation of the Constitution.
Hearing today
Noor Alam Khan's lawyer, Gohar Khan, claimed at the start of today's hearing that his client had neither left the PTI or the parliamentary party.
The party's instruction to Noor Alam Khan, the PTI's dissident MNA, concerning voting on the no-confidence motion against then-Prime Minister Imran Khan, demonstrates that the party acknowledged his client was a member, according to the lawyer.
Noor Alam was present at the April 3 meeting at which the PTI resolved to attend the National Assembly session called to vote on the no-confidence resolution.
A member of the ECP inquired if Noor Alam voted on the motion of no confidence.Noor Alam did not join any other political party or vote on the day of the no-confidence motion, according to his lawyer. He claimed that Article 63(1)(a) could not be used against him.
The lawyer claimed that his client is still a PTI member, and that the secretary-show-cause general's notice was nothing more than a piece of paper, as required by law.According to the SC's judgement, the ECP's full-court bench can make its decision.
MNAs are mentioned in references.
Prior to the no-confidence vote against then-prime minister Imran Khan, the PTI filed referrals against 20 MNAs, seeking their disqualification under Article 63-A of the Constitution.
