Member States reiterate support for a sustainable transition of polio pool and means

 Over fifty polio-free countries transitioned out of Global Polio Eradication Initiative support at the launch of 2022, marking a significant shift towards using polio means in an intertwined manner to strengthen health systems. Polio capacities in these countries have been integrated into other WHO programmes where they will help to make progress on broader health precedences, especially essential immunization, complaint surveillance, exigency preparedness and response and primary health care. 

 Formerly, the polio pool provides a backbone of support to the public health system in numerous countries. As we move closer to the thing of global polio eradication, Member States at the Executive Board stated their strong support for the direction of trip taken by WHO to insure that functions in polio-free settings are integrated and sustained. 

 The transition of the polio pool and means is acclimatized to country and indigenous environment, and takes a conservative, threat- grounded approach. In her reflections, the Regional Director for the African Region, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, noted that transitioned polio help in the African Region have “ expansive knowledge and chops( that) will also continue to profit other public health interventions. ” 

Several Member States articulated that sustainable backing of the WHO is vital to retain polio means. Delegates also handed guidance to WHO’s work in this area, pressing the need to have robust monitoring and evaluation, strong governance, and make on the benefactions of the polio network to COVID- 19 response and recovery to achieve lesser integration between programmes. 

 The Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Region, Dr Ahmed Al- Mandhari, noted, “ This time is the time for enhancing our work to make polio transition poignant. We must subsidize on the emotional progress of the once time and make the utmost of the openings to make lesser integration into our public health programmes. ” 

In her reflections, the WHO Deputy Director General, Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, underscored the important interlinkages between the polio eradication and polio transition dockets. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is presently enhancing eradication sweats where the contagion still remains, whilst transition moves ahead in polio-free settings. It's pivotal that both progress hand- in- hand, to insure that a polio-free world is achieved and sustained, and health systems are bolstered. 

 Dr Jakab ended the session by emphasising the significance of uninterrupted commitment and sustainable backing to maintain the transitioned polio functions. “ To keep the polio means where they're most demanded, we also need Member States ’ full political and fiscal commitment, including domestic backing. ”
