Following a high-profile libel lawsuit in London, actor Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard will return to court on Monday, this time in the United States, for a blockbuster defamation case involving spousal abuse charges.
The trial of Depp, 58, vs. Heard, 35, will be shown live on television. Both are scheduled to testify, as are actors James Franco and Paul Bettany, as well as Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX
The dispute revolves around a December 2018 Washington Post editorial in which Heard characterises herself as a "public figure representing domestic abuse" who was chastised online after her assault claims.
The title of the column was: "I came out against sexual abuse and was met with backlash from our culture. This must change."
The actress never mentions Depp, whom she met on the set of "The Rum Diary" in 2011 and was married to from 2015 to 2017, but he sued her for defamation, asking $50 million in damages for claiming he was an abuser.
"The suggestion in the op-ed that Mr. Depp is a domestic abuser is clearly and plainly incorrect. Mr. Depp never assaulted Ms. Heard in any way "According to the complaint.
Depp accuses Heard of attempting to "create positive PR for herself" in advance of the release of "Aquaman," in which she stars.
Heard countersued for $100 million, claiming that she was subjected to "rampant physical violence and abuse" by him.
According to her counterclaim, "the bogus action Mr Depp has filed against Ms Heard perpetuates that abuse and harassment."
