Marriyum Aurangzeb, Minister of Information, speaks at a press conference at the Press Information Center. |
- "Khan is peddling bogus conspiracy crap," Aurangzeb claims.
- "Why did Imran Khan keep the letter hidden until March 27 when he got it on March 8?" she wonders.
- Imran Khan has previously alleged that the NSC's statement proved there was a plot to depose him.
ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb stated on Saturday that a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) established that there was no plot to depose PTI Chairman Imran Khan.
The information minister was speaking to media in response to the ousted prime minister's press conference, in which he claimed that the National Security Council had confirmed his assertion of a foreign plot to depose him.
"Imran Khan is selling false conspiracy misinformation," the information minister told reporters, adding, "Why did Imran Khan keep the letter hidden until March 27 when he received it on March 8?"
Aurangzeb also questioned why the then-prime minister invited American officials to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit when discussing the supposed threat letter.
The PML-N leader slammed Imran Khan's administration, claiming that their boss wrecked the economy and robbed the country for four years. She went on to say, "They conducted economic terrorism in Pakistan."
Regarding the foreign funding matter, Aurangzeb stated that Khan received funds from abroad and failed to declare his finances to the Pakistani Election Commission (ECP).
"Imran Khan disguised his accounts and spent the monies for Shaukat Khanum Hospital on his party," she added, adding that the ECP will reveal the eight-year-old foreign funding case.
She went on to say that the foreign prime minister should explain how he "embezzled" millions of rupees.
Aurangzeb chastised Khan for claiming that if Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi takes office, the Kashmir issue will be settled, but he kept silent when Modi rescinded the occupied region's special status.
Khan's fate, according to the information minister, is to stage sit-ins. She did say, however, that the government will provide security wherever demonstrations and public meetings are held.

What was Khan's previous remark?
Earlier in the day, the PTI chairman stated that he had been correct all along, and that the NSC's latest statement indicates that there was a US plot to depose him.
Khan, speaking at his first press conference since being removed from office by a no-confidence motion, said the National Security Council meeting — chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif — endorsed the cable's authenticity and that Pakistan's ex-ambassador to the US met with American official Donald Lu, who used undiplomatic language.
"I'll go ahead and say he (Donald Lu) was arrogant [...] a Joe Biden administration official warned our envoy that Imran Khan would have to be ousted via a no-confidence resolution," the PTI chairman added.
Reiterating his assertion, Khan said the US official informed Pakistan's envoy that if he was removed from office, everything would be forgiven for Islamabad.
The National Security Council dismisses the possibility of a conspiracy
Despite Khan's claims, the National Security Council (NSC) has ruled out a foreign plot to destabilise the PTI-led government.
According to a statement from the PM Office, the NSC meeting was led by PM Shehbaz Sharif, and the telegram received from the Pakistan Embassy in Washington was discussed in detail.
Dr. Asad Majeed Khan, the former Pakistani ambassador to Washington, informed the group on the background of his diplomatic cable, which contained the claimed threat sent to the PTI government by a US official last month.
"After reviewing the contents of the communication, the NSC reaffirmed the decision made at the previous NSC meeting. The NSC was once again assured by the top security agencies that no proof of a conspiracy had been discovered."
"As a result, the NSC believes that there was no foreign conspiracy after evaluating the contents of the letter, the evaluation received, and the conclusions offered by the security agencies."
